Investigation & Advocacy Service (IAS): Increasing Access to Justice for the Unjustly Imprisoned

The criminal justice system is built on the principle of fairness, but when that system fails, the consequences are devastating. For individuals who have been wrongfully convicted or excessively sentenced, access to skilled legal advocacy can mean the difference between continued injustice and long-overdue freedom.

That is where the Investigation & Advocacy Service (IAS) comes in.

What Is the Investigation & Advocacy Service (IAS)?

IAS is a nonprofit legal corporation formed to increase access to justice for the unjustly imprisoned.

IAS works at the intersection of investigation, legal advocacy, and education. Its mission is to investigate and correct wrongful convictions and excessive sentences, and to educate, support and train students, lawyers, and legal professionals who are engaged in postconviction work on behalf of prisoners.

By combining legal expertise with in-depth investigative work, IAS helps uncover new evidence, challenge flawed convictions, and advocate for those who have been overlooked by the system.

How IAS Makes an Impact

Postconviction cases are among the most challenging in the legal system. They often involve:

  • Incomplete or outdated evidence
  • Procedural barriers to reopening cases
  • Limited resources for investigation and expert analysis

IAS addresses these challenges by working collaboratively with attorneys and investigators, helping to build stronger cases through:

  • Independent investigations
  • Access to forensic experts
  • Litigation support for appeals, clemency petitions, and parole proceedings

This collaborative model not only strengthens individual cases, it also contributes to broader systemic improvements by raising the standard of postconviction advocacy.

A Shared Commitment to Justice

The mission of IAS closely aligns with the work being done at MRH Law, particularly when it comes to advocating for individuals who have been wrongfully convicted.

While representing injury victims is our focus, MRH Law is also passionate about postconviction cases, and we often take these on a pro bono basis. These efforts reflect a broader commitment to justice, one that extends beyond civil litigation and into the pursuit of accountability within the criminal justice system.

This shared focus is evident in cases like those of Byron Case and Jeffrey Weinhaus, where persistence, legal strategy, and thorough investigation are essential to uncovering new evidence and challenging unjust outcomes.

MRH Law attorney Brian Russell’s involvement as Vice President of IAS is a natural extension of that commitment. Through his role with the organization, he contributes to a larger network of attorneys and investigators working to re-examine convictions and advocate for those who have been overlooked by the system.

At MRH Law, the pursuit of justice does not stop at civil litigation. Through involvement with organizations like IAS, attorneys like our own Brian Russell are helping to ensure that those who have been wrongfully convicted have a voice, and a path forward.

Correcting wrongful convictions requires persistence, expertise, and a willingness to take on difficult cases. IAS embodies that mission, and MRH Law is proud to be part of that effort. If you have questions about these types of cases, please reach out to MRH Law.
