Why the End of the Year is Ideal for Settling Personal Injury Cases
Happy Holidays! It’s a busy time of year for most people. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, things can get a little crazy. This is especially true for most personal injury law firms. This is because the end of the year is a usually when most cases settle. There’s often a mad rush to wrap up cases which means us personal injury lawyers usually do double duty. Here’s why I think the end of the year is the best time to try and get a personal injury case settled.
Insurance Companies Aim to Clear Liabilities
Insurance companies want to clear out their liabilities. In my experience, insurance companies usually want to start the new year with a clean slate. That means paying out settlements to clear liabilities and balance their books. We often leverage this to achieve higher payouts in personal injury cases.
Clients Want Extra Money for the Holidays
Personal injury clients want some money for the holidays. Not only do insurance companies want to payout before the end of the year, but clients also often want money for the holidays. I tend to get a lot of phone calls from clients asking if they can settle their cases before Thanksgiving so that they can have a little extra money for Christmas.
Holiday Juries Often Lead to Higher Settlements
Defendants want to avoid holiday juries. Maybe it just comes with the season, but in my experience, juries tend to give bigger verdicts near the holidays. If your case is on file and you have a trial date near the holidays, you can leverage this to try and get a bigger settlement. Of course, you’ll still need to be able to win your case. But if you have a good case, chances are you’ll get a better offer near a holiday trial date than you would otherwise.
